Politics, Money, and My Past Life as a Lender

June 25th 2008 19:29
Way back in my past, I was a lender for a big national bank. This was in the mid-90s and before a lot of this craziness happened. In fact, I said no all the time to people wanting loans even when they did have fairly great credit but also had a lot of debts. I cannot believe how out of control things have gotten over the years. Well, now we are paying for it in spades.

I learned a lot from that past experience and, although I make a number of financial mistakes all the time, it has definitely helped me during certain periods of my life. My banking experience helped me to be a better planner overall with my money. It came after I accrued a lot of student loans to pay for my college education, but before I went to buy my first house.

I know that not everyone has that kind of background to help them out, but as I look at all of the economic hardships we are dealing with in this current economy, I am glad that I know the little I do. I know that politicians don’t want to hear this because if we don’t spend money, then we will officially go into a recession, but the fact is, this is the time to save not spend. I got a nice economic stimulus check last month and it went into the bank.

The politicians want us to spend, but before I will go anywhere to buy anything, I need my gas to be cheaper. I also need the food I buy to feed my family to be cheaper. I am growing my own garden vegetables because it will save me money in the long run even though it will mean more work for me. So rather than sending me a stimulus check, a better way to jump start our economy would have been to decrease gas prices. That would mean I could afford to travel and take my family on vacations where I would have to spend money on food for them to eat. Get the picture?

In my opinion, gas prices are creating a lot of the problems we are currently experiencing with the economy. I know that the real estate market and the current crisis is another big factor. When it comes to gas if the politicians would actually pay attention to their constituents, they might see that legislating the speculators and the industry as a whole while getting our prices lowered would be the way to get a lot of Americans to start opening up their wallets again.
