Money and Politics

June 14th 2008 13:19
There are a number of postings about the current economy and how politics play a part. I think it is amazing that there are so many different viewpoints and no one can seem to compromise. I am not going to say what party I am affiliated with because I want to keep this posting a little more bipartisan.

The culture of our political system does not allow for a meeting of the minds, so to speak, between politicians. Even with the assumed presidential candidates, we see that the plans they create are designed to make a few people happy. Unfortunately, they like to play to the loudest voice rather than what really makes sense.

For those middle class people out there, you know what your concerns are especially when it comes to your money. I can't help but wonder why isn't any listening to us. Is it because we are too busy working at our jobs. How many of us work one or more jobs just to get the bills paid each month. We have to build up our next egg because social security will run out of money in just over ten years. So that huge chunk that comes out of our monthly payment is not something you will ever see come back to you. We also have to put a larger amount away for college funds. Government is giving less to colleges so they have to charge more (ok, there's more to that story, but not for today).

What's the good news here, oh that's right, they have raised the limit on how much money a student can borrow in guaranteed loans. Huh? They are going to help us with our debt problems by letting us borrow more? Gee, isn't that the problem many people have today, too much dependence on debt.

Let's see what else do we have, gas prices. Now isn't that a joke, there isn't enough oil to go around since countries throughout the world have increased consumption. Oh wait, that's not really the whole problem. The problem is because future traders want to get rich. They bet that prices would rise and sure enough it did! I'm shocked, really. So now, I feel better about paying $4 / gallon since it's really our own people driving up the prices! Ok, maybe not but surely there is something that can be done to help the middle class.

You know, I don't want to forget the cost of food. Inflation is hitting this pretty hard as well. Grains are now being used for biofuel to help reduce the dependence on gas. It's not reducing the cost for us and is in fact driving up other costs. I will bet that there are several politicians that got a hefty grant for their state to explore the use of biofuels so they pumping up that idea. Don't get me wrong, I think we should be looking at other options, but I think that there are people that are misguided. I definitely don't think that any of the plans proposed by these assumed presidential nominees or any other politicians are worth anything.

We have a lot of problems that need addressed, but this is nothing new. Every generation has had it's problems, they just change. I just want to make sure that the middle class voter is not forgotten. We are a hard working group, that are fundamentally happy to be Americans. We are concerned about money because we have our own families to care for and don't want to see government make it harder on us. We aren't looking for a free ride (ok, it would be nice just once to win the lottery), but we also don't want to feel like we are constantly being taken advantage of.

I have heard a lot of frustrated people say they would like to move to Australia to get away (I like Australia, too), but that won't solve anything for us. What would be nice is to not be forgotten in the middle and have the politicians look at us to say, "What can we do for you?" I know it's hard for the assumed presidential nominees. They are both very well off (rich), so somehow that means it's ok to just ignore the middle class.

What am I trying to say...Big government, as you continue to take my money, could you remember that I need a little help too. Maybe help us out by getting the gas prices lower (that helps everyone) and find other things to do that will lower our costs.
