Dealing With Creditors
June 23rd 2008 18:17
Getting behind on your bills makes you a prime target for predators – I mean creditors (maybe even debt collectors). This is not where you want to be. They are ruthless. Money is involved and they need you to pay up in order for them to get incentives. It is not a business that many people normally get into because it is the ugly side of credit.
Dealing with these people is not going to be simple unless you pay up – now. Understandably, that may not be possible consider the position you got in. They may call your relatives and your neighbors to find you and get you to pay. As nasty as it is, they are trying to hunt you down and one way they can do this is by embarrassing you in front of others. It is also a way to bully you into making you pay.
You need to get them off your back. You can move to the South American jungle and hide out until they charge off the money, but your family may not like that a lot. You can also deal with them directly. Don’t hide from them. Tell them your situation and work out a repayment deal. Your best bet is to do this before you get to a debt collector, but if that’s not possible, you still have an opportunity to negotiate. You can offer to make monthly payments that are actually affordable to you. Depending on your financial situation, you could also offer them a payoff for a lower amount. A debt collector has purchased your debt for less than you actually owe. When you offer them less money, they may still be able to make a profit…and that’s their goal.
Don’t blow them off – they will harass you and everyone you know. Instead, negotiate with your creditors for something that is more affordable to you. Keep in mind that the creditor can reject your offer, but it never hurts to ask.
