Getting Scholarships for College
June 18th 2008 01:48
I had a great comment on yesterday’s Job Champion blog. I started to make a reply and realized that other people may have questions about scholarships. In fact, it made me realize that many people don’t know that they could get scholarships to help them pay for college. There are those scholarships out there that are not need based and also don’t consider grades as a requirement.
As a mother returning to college that’s an additional bonus. Depending on income and where you live, someone in that situation may be able to qualify for special government funds. If your college has a special department for adult students, check with them about whether or not there are funds available that you may be qualified to receive while attending college.
Most adults returning to school assume that scholarships are mainly for the young, traditional age student. They also may not know where to find them. Scholarships may be available through a wide variety of sources…some may be very surprising to you. There are scholarships for people of specific ethnic backgrounds, certain majors, and even religions. Another good place to check that most people don’t even consider often is local civic organizations like Kiwanis and Rotary.
Don’t pass on small dollar scholarships that may only be for a few hundred dollars. Remember that every dollar you get in a scholarship doesn’t have to be repaid like those student loans. If you apply for enough of those, you may even pay for your entire college education. It takes a little work to find these scholarships, but with the Internet, it is entirely possible to find ones that could apply to your situation.
You would be surprised at the number of scholarships that are available. There really are ones that not given out each year because there was no applicant. One piece of advice I would give regarding scholarships, it takes a little work to find them, but it really isn’t worth it to pay for a service to find any type of financial aid for you.
I wrote a book about financial aid in 2007 called LIfetips 101 Student Loan Tips, if you want more information about financial aid.
